Wild, Ronald (1908 –2003)
Ronald (Ronnie) Wild grew up in Oldham playing the cornet (switching later to the trumpet) alongside his father in local shows for Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Societies. For eleven seasons (1926-1937) he played for Clarice Dunnington’s Orchestra which was only for ladies (apart from Archie Camden, who was Clarice Dunnington’s husband, George Cottam and Ronald Wild!).
During this time he enrolled at the Royal Manchester College of Music, freelancing in local cinemas and attending Sir Hamilton Harty’s rehearsals with the Hallé orchestra. From 1932 to 1939 he played for eight Winter Seasons with the Hastings Municipal Orchestra under Basil Cameron and played with the Carl Rosa Opera Company.
In 1939 Ronnie was principal trumpet with the Sadlers Wells Opera Company and from 1945-1949 was in the Philharmonia (alongside Dennis Brain et al.). He also appeared as guest principal trumpet with the Hallé (touring Belgium, Holland & France with Sir John Barbirolli), the London Symphony Orchestra and Sir Thomas Beecham’s Royal Philharmonic, which Ronnie loved.
During the 1940s he recorded for Decca, played for films at Denham and Ealing Studios and in addition to other freelance London theatre work was principal trumpet for the Sunday concerts of Vic Oliver’s Symphony Orchestra.
In 1949 he was principal trumpet of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and from 1952 into the 1960s was principal trumpet with the London Festival Ballet Company. He was a talented composer too - a skill that he maintained throughout his life alongside his trumpet playing.
The manuscript of the solo violin partof L'Envoi has the following message:
To Ronald Wild, a trumpeter who also understands the violin admiringly.
