Telemann, Georg Philipp (1681-1767)

Telemann was almost completely self-taught, playing flute, oboe, violin, viola da gamba, recorder, double bass, and other instruments, as well as composing prolifically, all against his family's wishes. He first studied law in Leipzig but eventually settled on a career in music, settling in Hamburg in 1721. He is one of the most prolific composers in history and was compared favourably in his time with J S Bach and G F Handel.
