Composer Andrew J Smith was born in Stockport, Cheshire in 1985. His musical education began at William Hulme’s Grammar School where he was awarded the D M Williams Memorial Prize for Music. Since then, Andrew has successfully completed a BA(Hons) Music Studies degree at Leeds College of Music and although having received postgraduate study offers from Durham and York Universities, remained at Leeds to study his MA under Dr David Fligg and Professor Barry Russell. Andrew was awarded the Sir Michael Grady Prize for Composition at Leeds during the final year of his BA.
Previous compositions include works written for musical theatre for organisations such as The Owls, Opera North, The Goldberg Ensemble, The London Sinfonietta and COMA. Andrew is currently working on a commission for the West Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra. In music education Andrew is the holder of the 2007/08 Feiweles Trust Bursary at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. He has also received employment as a composer, animateur and tutor for institutions such as Opera North, Yamaha, York Theatre Royal and several Local Education Authorities.
