Baker, Lance

Lance Baker (1947 - 2021) was born into a family of musicians: his mother was the composer Ruth Gipps and his father the clarinettist Robert Baker. He grew up in Birmingham, was a chorister at Westminster Abbey and then a music scholar at Winchester College. He began playing the horn at the age of 9 and this instrument became his life.

After music college he played as a freelance for some years, while doing 42 auditions for permanent posts. During these years, he also worked as a brass teacher, music copyist and arranger. He became Co-Principal Horn at English National Opera, where he also did some arranging work for Sir Charles Mackerras.

Lance taught brass all his life and many of his arrangements were written for groups of his students. Like his mother in her compositions, he always made sure every player had something interesting to do!
