John was born in Sheffield and studied music at Oxford University. After reading one of his essays, his tutor there sighed, looked at him and said, “Every essay I read of yours seems to have been written from the first horn chair.…” “Guilty as charged”, he replied, and since then not much has changed. He is best known for his book, “The Early Horn”, which is published by Cambridge University Press, but he has also contributed to the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Brass Instruments and his written widely on horn players and horn playing in journals including the Historic Brass Society Journal, The Horn Call, The Hornplayer and Brass Bulletin.
He has written sleeve notes for recordings by players including Barry Tuckwell, Frank Lloyd, Michael Thompson, Anthony Halstead, Javier Bonet and many others, as well as providing programme notes for hundreds of concerts over the years. He is also editor-in-chief for the US-based course, “Brass for beginners”.
John has been arranging music for brass instruments since his school days and, apart from his work for edition db, his arrangements and editions have been published by Brasswind, June Emerson, De Haske and others. His editions and reconstructions of Mozart’s horn concertos have also been recorded several times.
