Richard’s earliest involvement with music was through singing but he soon became seriously involved with the horn, playing with the Leicestershire Schools Symphony Orchestra. He was principal horn for the LSSO’s first record (Tippett’s Prince Charles Suite, Ridout’s Concertante, Matthias’ Sinfonietta and Arnold’s Divertimento) in 1967.
While he knew he was reasonably competent, he did not feel he was good enough for a career in music as a horn player so instead he pursued a varied career, first as a Physics teacher, then running his own recording studio and sound engineering business. Eventually working as a software developer and consultant working with leading edge Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems. Throughout this period, he maintained his involvement with a variety of styles of music.
After his wife passed away, he returned to playing the horn and has since also learned to play the harp. He is active in local music in South Cheshire playing in a wind quintet, 2 concert bands, deputising for a variety of local orchestras and leading his own swing band - The Swinging Woodpeckers.
