Cleaver, Michael

Michael Cleaver was born in Leamington Spa and learnt to play the piano at the age of four. After taking up organ and trombone, he read Music at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, an environment in which he could regularly hear performances of his own music. He subsequently went on to the London Opera Centre, which led to positions with opera houses in Germany, English National Opera and Opera North.

The core of his work has been as a pianist and he has played a wide range of music from cabaret to Shostakovich’s Second Piano Concerto. Concert and recording engagements have included song, instrumental and chamber music programmes in Germany and Britain. He made his Wigmore Hall début in 1980, and has appeared on television as a collaborative pianist in the Young Musician of the Year competition (for which he has also been an adjudicator) and with the cellist Julian Lloyd-Webber.
He has toured with classical saxophonist Eugene Rousseau, and is a featured soloist in the Orchestra of Opera North’s recording of Constant Lambert’s ballet music Tiresias.

Michael is founder of the chamber music group Arcturus, whose repertoire extends from Haydn, through the major classics, to several world premières. He also works as a singing coach, plays recitals with many well-known singers, and arranges music for various vocal and instrumental groups.
